Overview

Under direct supervision of the Staff Engineer Managing, Juarez Metrology Labs, provides direct support to the Metrology Labs in Juarez by executing standard measurement and inspection methods and assisting in the development and validation of new methodologies for Shure's global metrology labs. The Engineer I contributes to advanced measurement development initiatives by performing analysis, data collection, and documentation to support corporate directives, working closely with respective engineers within the global metrology labs, including incoming inspection measurement methodologies, training, and equipment.  Measurement development initiatives will include but not be limited to: developing corporate measurement technology plans, analysis, determining implications of measurement uncertainty, influencing internal and external projects for new technologies and novel applications to support Shure needs.

Responsibilities

  • Execute and Document Measurement Programs: Responsible for programming, testing, and executing measurement methods on 1, 2, and 3-dimensional applications using contact and non-contact computer-controlled CMMs.
  • Support Method Development and Standardization: Assists in the development and standardization of mechanical inspection and measurement methodologies, procedures, and operator training under the guidance of senior staff.
  • Fixture and Tooling Support: Supports the optimum design of fixturing, tooling, machines, sensors, and measurement systems by gathering data and performing initial analysis in collaboration with Design Engineering.
  • Equipment and Capability Assessment Support: Assists in the assessment of existing metrology equipment capabilities and aids in the procurement and implementation of new equipment as needed.
  • Metrology Concepts Application: Applies intermediate concepts and understanding of mathematical definitions of GD&T (e.g., ASME Y14.5.1) to ensure design intent for product, tooling, and machines.
  • Knowledge Development: Actively develops and maintains foundational expertise in dimensional metrology through networking, research, and continuous education.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial Engineering, or related field. Graduate coursework is desirable.
  • 0 - 2 years of experience.
  • Foundational knowledge and academic experience in applying design standards including ASME Y14.5, ISO, and other standards.
  • Basic theoretical and practical understanding of dimensional metrology concepts and equipment.
  • Able to operate and execute established measurement programs on contact and non-contact computer-controlled CMM’s, with the ability to learn to interpret and establish new methods.
  • Understanding of measurement applications, sampling effects and weighted distribution effects on measurement algorithms.
  • Ability to learn and apply basic mathematical concepts as they relate to metrology and measurement uncertainty.
  • Experience should exist in the following areas:
    • use and specification of precision measurement equipment in a metrology environment,
    • development and/or application of standards,
    • project management utilizing cross-functional teams including customers and/or suppliers,
    • technical writing of specifications and procedures
  • Preferred: ASME Certified Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing Professional, Technician or Provisional level, or actively pursuing certification.
  • Able to use professional concepts in developing resolution to critical issues and broad design matters.
  • Able to exercise wide latitude in determining objectives and approaches to critical assignments.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment.
  • Ability to work independently in analyzing and implementing solutions to problems
  • Willing and capable of Global travel to Shure sites, suppliers, conferences, etc. throughout the year.
