The Manager, Digital Signal Processing is responsible for developing, leading, motivating, managing, and optimally allocating DSP staff to product development, advanced development, and departmental and corporate projects.  Will work with engineering leaders to define and improve DSP and Machine Learning design techniques and processes, identify potential future technologies in both conventional algorithms as well as AI/ML approaches, and define the strategic direction for the DSP group. Will guide the group to develop and maintain audio products and accessories that meet the quality, cost, and delivery requirements set by the Product Development and Global Marketing Divisions.

Responsibilities

  • Manages the activities of DSP engineering Associates (direct reports ranging from entry to more senior level)
  • Regularly interacts with and provides updates to senior Engineering management. Works directly with internal and external project managers to assure that work planning and task resources are allocated to ensure predictable and consistent results
  • Plans and makes decisions in a pragmatic manner. Collaborates to obtain the best solutions.  Thrives and influences change in an evolving landscape
  • Leads to create audio processing features and requirements when there may be few. Able to wear many management hats when necessary: functional group leader, project manager, technology leader, project leader, big thinker, small thinker
  • Develops performance and growth plans with Associates and evaluates Associate performance against the plans. Provides for Associate skills training to assure the success of product implementation and Associate career development.
  • Responsible for implementing, documenting, and improving engineering methods to support established product development processes as well as define new ones
  • Responsible for the execution of multiple complex engineering projects, including current product development, advanced development, product modifications, and departmental projects
  • Keeps current on matters of technological advances in DSP algorithms, Machine Learning, and development practices, tools, etc., to ensure the highest possible "state of the art" competency within the department
  • Ensures Associates have proper working conditions and necessary equipment for success
  • Ensures the compliance of corporate policies and procedures
  • Effectively communicates technical and non-technical topics both verbally and in written form and manages time efficiently to support project teams

Qualifications

  • BS degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or Software Engineering. An emphasis in Digital Signal Processing strongly desired. 
  • Minimum of 7 years of experience in related field focusing on product development.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a team leader or manager incorporating DSP/ML software, hardware, or system design. Experience in a cross functional management or leadership role desired. 
  • Experience working on cross functional teams developing and optimizing software, firmware/embedded, AI/Machine Learning and algorithms as a DSP engineer as well as managing or leading small groups of junior developers or small projects.
  • Experience with low latency real-time audio algorithm development, conferencing or A/V product design, digital audio codecs, microphone arrays, spatial audio, audio algorithm and/or system testing is also a plus
  • Performance management skills including the ability to create and execute change, demonstrated leadership abilities, coaching, and team building abilities
  • Effective communication skills, both written and verbal, including the ability to influence across departments, convey department and company vision, present departmental activities to a larger audience, and gain acceptance of others in sensitive situations
  • Ability to wear many management hats when necessary: functional group leader, project manager, technology leader, project leader, big thinker, small thinker
  • Ability to coordinate work and people across continents
  • Willing and able to both defend and modify choices later in project cycles. Can tolerate late change requests and shifting audio processing requirements.
  • Has a desire to find the best solutions to problems and doesn’t have tunnel vision to a particular process or method without considering the whole picture
  • Familiarity with test and measurement equipment including oscilloscopes, logic analyzers, audio analyzers, and digital multi-meters.
  • Familiarity with standard software development processes and tools, such as Requirements Management, Bug Tracking, and Version control
  • Familiarity with audio industry standards and organizations (AES, ITU, IEEE, etc.)

Experience with any of the following considered a plus:

  • Interfacing with remotely-located associates, management, or development teams.
  • Familiarity, experience, or management of any of the following:
  • Low latency audio processing
  • Machine Learning / Artificial Intelligence
  • Audio processing for conferencing
  • Microphone arrays
  • Embedded Linux
  • Embedded Android
  • Designing and deploying DSP algorithms for FPGA targets
  • Audio codecs
  • Bluetooth audio products
  • Deploying audio algorithms on iOS or Android platforms
  • Audio algorithm and system testing and validation
  • Modelling and Simulation tools such as Matlab or NumPi/SciPi and related development processes
  • Experience in studio recording, live sound reinforcement, and/or live performance
  • Fixed point audio development and debugging
